How to avoid potential plumbing problems.

Check your plumbing system for leaks

It’s a fact. With certain plumbing issues, you just have to call in the plumbing professionals to help with emergency repairs. But, by putting together a simple checklist you can potentially help avoid some of those plumbing problems from ever occurring.

Home plumbing checklist.

Each season brings different challenges for your home’s plumbing system. Summer usually brings weather that requires more water, for yards, etc. Winter brings cold weather that can freeze pipes and damage your system. At least twice a year, preferably every season, put together a plumbing checklist that comprises the following items:

  • Do your research and source a reliable, local plumber and call for an inspection. Doing this once or twice a year can really help telegraph any potential problems before they become major ones.
Try to clear out your pipes if you notice a slow drain
  • Take note of your water pressure and if there’s a decrease while washing dishes, bathing or taking a shower – try to figure out why. Clean faucets or shower heads to remove any sediment build up or use a water pressure gauge to measure yours. If you can't easily figure out the cause of the problem, there may be a water main leak. If so, call a plumber right away!
  • Check faucets, under sinks, valves and pipes around the toilet, hoses and outdoor valves, appliances like dishwashers, fridges and washing machines for any signs of leaks. It’s better to do this monthly rather than once per season as even a minor leak can be a major drain on water bill costs. Of course, a major leak requires a plumbing professional immediately.
  • Monitor shower, sink and bath drains, and garbage disposals for signs that they may be clogged. If they drain slower than normal, you may be dealing with a clogged pipe or drain. Causes can be sediment build up or putting items like fibrous vegetables or oil/grease down drains or garbage disposal systems. Be mindful of what you put in these places to avoid any potential problems.

By creating a home plumbing checklist and going through the items on there every season, you will help avoid potential plumbing problems before they occur. However, if you do require a plumber for an inspection or any other repair issue, just give us a call!
